The African Striped Grass Mouse ( Lemniscomys barbarus ) is also commonly known as the Zebra Mouse. It is a small mouse measuring 3 - 4 inches in length with the tail being at least as long as the body.
The fur is brown and has a number of black stripes running from head to tail.
The Striped Mouse in its natural enviroment lives in dry bush, grass savannahs and semi desert enviroments.

Housing.

I keep my Striped Mice in large clear plastic containers with secure locking lids. The containers have many small holes drilled near to the top. This ensures good airflow in and out of the enclosure. I house mine in pairs in 30in x 12in x 18in containers. Striped mice can be kept in large social groups but will obviously need much larger enclosures.
I use quality dust free wood shavings as a substrate to a depth of a couple of inches.
I used to place small houses in the enclosure but none of my pairs have ever used them. I now just place in pet quality paper bedding and hay. In a matter of a couple of hours the mice have shredded the paper bedding and hay to make a nest. Even if I placed this bedding in the house they would never use it.
One item I have found they love in their enclosures are Silent Spinners / Saucers. They spend hours running on these. They are safe as they are solid and it is impossible for them to catch their tails in them.
Again as with other species of mice I keep these mice are odourless. They do not smell like nrmal mice !!!.

One word of warning do not hold these mice by their tails. They are more than likely to drop it or you will take the skin off it. Once this happens the tail will die.
