Our Babies

Scientific Name     Petaurus breviceps

On Sunday 24th of August 2008 we introduced a breeding pair of Sugar Gliders to our family. Our son Andrew had liked Sugar Gliders for many years but we had always resisted the temptation to get some.
Due to Andrews dedication to the Skunks and his thorough research on the Gliders we decided to get him a pair. Quite by chance our friends from Prickly Hedgehogs had purchased a lovely Hedgehog from a couple in Wigton, Cumbria. On returning they told us what a lovely couple the breeders were and just happened to mention they had some Suger Gliders for sale.
After a phone call and a two and a half journey we arrived at Graeme and Kaseys house. Our friends were right, they were indeed a lovely couple who were totally dedicated to their animals. Graeme and Kasey spent a couple of hours talking about the care of their animals and made sure we went away with a full detailed descriptoin of how they had looked after their Gliders. It was fantastic.

Sugar gliders are a nocturnal animal. They are a marsupial, with young being nursed in pouch. It appears our female may have babies in her pouch as we can see a couple of lumps in the pouch.

Housing.

The Sugar Gliders are housed in a 10ft long x 6ft high x 2ft deep enclosure. The enclosure was built by Jamie my daughters boyfriend. He has done an outstanding job. The gliders have rope runs and swings, plenty of shelves and numerous houses to hide in.  Sugar Gliders can and will escape through very small gaps so very small diameter mesh is used.. Security is a very high priority.
The enclsure has a number of levels so the the Gliders can explore and a few large branches fr them to run up and down.
