Housing.

We home our Ferrets in a large enclosure, the brand name is a Ferret furet tower. it is a 2 tier cage that is quite tall and spacious. To this cage we have added a number of play tubes which extend from the cage, giving more play area.

The ferrets are out a number of times a day for a run around and some cuddling.
If the Ferrets were not out as much we would build an extension to the cage to allow them more space.

Handling

Our ferrets came to us as hand tame. They can still nip when playing but it is not too bad. We get the ferrets out a number of times a day to have a play and cuddle. This keeps them friendly / tame and this in turn will help with things like health checks, nail clipping, grooming etc.
It is fantastic to watch them interact with each other out of their enclosure. They hop, skip, jump, run, play fight and it is all going on at a hundred miles an hour.

Update 30/05/2009.

Other than some playful nips when small not one of the Ferrets has ever bitten. They are extrememly socialised and friendly.

Food and Water.

We feed our ferrets a number of branded Ferret diets that we mix together as their staple diet.
As treats we offer small pieces of roast chicken, small amounts of wet cat or dog food, small amounts of scramled egg, they love raw mince, chicken mince, low fat cottage cheese.
They are also offered day old chicks, defrosted mice and chicken legs / wings as treats. They really enjoy these.

Water is given by a water bottle. The water is changed daily so is always fresh.

Grooming and Bathing

We bath our Ferrets every couple of months. They seem to really love having a bath. We pop bath toys into the bath and they love to play with these in the water.
We use a branded Ferret shampoo and have no problems with it.
Nails need to be cut on occasions.

Litter Training

We cant take credit for this as our youngsters were well on the way to being litter trained.
We were informed though that Ferrets like to do their business in corners so there was a litter tray placed in the corner of the enclosure. The Ferrets were using this. They are quite funny to watch when they need the toilet. They back themselves into the corner of the litter tray as far as the possibly can before they will use the toilet.
We use a scoop to take out faeces daily and completely change litter every 3 days.
