This section is dedicated to our African Pygmy Hedgehogs. We will discuss everthing from housing to breeding.
As mentioned earlier we are writing about how we are caring for our animals and not how you should care for them. If you think some of our information is of use, please use it but we cannot and do not except any responsibility if you feel any of the information has been detremental to your hog.

We originally saw African pygmy Hedgehogs in Animal Kingdom Florida in 2000. We immediately fell in love with them. After a long chat with a member of staff we decided we would like to keep these lovely animals. We came home and researched more but decided against getting any until we could devote more time to them. As we had two young children and two teenagers, we thought we had enough on our hands !!!.
We have continued to research and eventually this year we took the plunge.

African Pygmy Hedgehogs are a tropical animal that require a warm enviroment. Under no circumstances are these animals to be kept outside. THEY WILL PERISH.

We have 16 African Pygmy Hedgehogs. We have 4 males called Humphrey, Hezakiah, Prickles and Hercules. The 12 females are called Hettie, Holga, Tallulah, Poppy, Pearl, Gemini, Winnie, Tango, Safron, Pepper, Lucy and Sunshine.

The names except Prickles, Tallulah were chosen by Victoria our 8 year old daughter.

Prickles, Tango and Saffron came from Prickly Hedge Hedgehogs.
Pearl came from Shropshire Hedgehogs

Feeding.

We feed our hedgehogs on a variety of brands of dried cat food. We mix these together so that the hedgehogs do not become dependent on a particlar brand. We feed the chicken flavour. The dried cat food must be low in fat content.
We also offer small amounts of fruit and veg. We chop these up quite fine. Fruit we feed are apple, pear, the odd strawberry, bits of banana.
We feed meal worms every other day and about 12 to each hedgehog. We also feed insect mix w.hich is a food intended for wild birds or insect eating birds
As an occasional treat we also feed chicken cat chunks ( wet ). We feed a quality brand, not the cheaper brands. We also offer fresh cooked chichen, as an occasional treat. Another occasional treat we offer is scrambled egg mixed with a small amount of honey.

On the 17/07/2008 we puurchased some freeze dried mealworms to see if the hedgehogs would eat them. We thought they probably have a better nutritional value than the live ones. They seem to love these and took them no problems.

Housing
We keep our hedgehogs in seperate cages. Each cage is 39 in long x 21 in wide and 17 in wide. Each cage bottom has a layer of hemp bedding. The hedgehogs require a house in which they sleep and retreat to. We place a large 12 in diameter wheel for the hedgehogs to exercise on. This is discussed more in a later article.
We either use dried corn cob or hemp as a base material for the hedgehogs and place Ready Grass for the hedgehogs to use as bedding material.
The enclosures are in a large room in the house that is thermostaticlly heated. This provides a stable temp especially in the winter.
